Microsoft’s CVP of Gaming Cloud, Kareem Choudhry recently penned a post for Xbox Wire discussed the in-development Project xCloud, Microsoft’s take on game streaming. No concrete details about when we’ll be able to get our hands on the technology were revealed but it was confirmed that public trials would still commence this year.

One question people have had concerning game streaming is whether traditional game consoles will be replaced; according to Choudhry, Project xCloud is being designed in a way that makes it complementary to consoles and gives users a choice about which form factor they want to play on. It also opens up console-quality games to people all around the world who don’t own consoles or a PC to play these games.

In a demonstration of the technology, Choudhry showed off a phone attached to an Xbox One controller which was paired using Bluetooth. This allowed the player to make movements on the Forza game being streamed to the phone. The game was also able to retain its graphics quality because all the processing is done in the cloud.

The firm said that it’ll share more information about the technology and its progress in the coming months, including details on when public trials will begin.
